Project overview
HydroQuest and CMN (Constructions Mécaniques de Normandie), with the support of the University of Caen Normandie, successfully developed and installed in April 2019 a 1MW hydrokinetic tidal turbine in Paimpol-Bréhat (Brittany), as part of an agreement with EDF.
In June 2019 a new decisive step was reached by connecting the machine to the French national grid.
Nearly two years later this turbine is reliably and predictably producing electricity for the French National grid. There has been no down time required by repairs, or by problems with the technology. This prototype shows the technology’s performance under real operating conditions.
Featuring a unique two-vertical-axes technology, this cross-flow turbine is unaffected by tidal current direction, enabling the unit to be fixed to its foundation without any production loss.
The all-metal structure improves resistance to water-related constraints while reducing the cost of maintenance and operations.
